Licencing Requirements

Please find below some of the standards we follow to be able to hold a breeding licence for upto 20 girls, something we are very proud of. We received a perfect score at our last unannounced inspection, something that can happen at any point.

Number of Breeding Bitches:

  • In England, you need a dog breeding license if you breed three or more litters of puppies per year and/or sell puppies for profit. Each license applies to a specific number of breeding bitches.

Inspection:

  • An inspection of your premises by an authorized officer from your local council and there appointed Vet is required before a license is granted. The inspector will assess the conditions in which the dogs are kept and ensure they meet specific welfare standards and you are graded accordingly.

Welfare Standards:

  • You must meet certain welfare standards for the dogs, including adequate food, water, shelter, exercise, and veterinary care. The regulations aim to ensure the well-being of the dogs and are at two levels, Required and Higher Standards.

Socialization and Exercise:

  • The regulations emphasize the importance of socialization and exercise for dogs, and it's required that dogs have access to a suitable exercise area.

Record Keeping:

  • You will be required to keep detailed records of your breeding activities, including information on each dog, litters produced, vaccinations, veterinary care, and sales records.

Staff Training and Knowledge:

  • Staff involved in dog breeding must have the necessary knowledge and training in animal welfare and dog care. All our staff members have been through, or are in the process of achieving these to a NVQ Level of 3 or above.

Health Testing:

  • Some breeds may require specific health testing for hereditary conditions.

Microchipping and Identification:

  • All puppies must be microchipped and registered in the owner's name before they are sold.

Licensing Fees:

  • Fees for a dog breeding license vary depending on your local council and the number of breeding bitches you have.

Duration of License:

  • Licenses are typically issued for one to three years and must be renewed before they expire.

Penalties:

  • Failure to obtain a required license or adhere to the regulations can result in penalties, including fines and potential closure of the breeding establishment.

We are more than happy to say we got a 100% score to the higher standards. working well above them on many aspects of what we do.
